AI memory is an AI assistant’s ability to remember things about you across separate conversations — your name, preferences, an ongoing project — so you don’t have to repeat yourself. Strictly speaking, the language model itself remembers nothing: it is stateless, and every message starts fresh. “Memory” is built around the model by the app, which saves notes from your chats, retrieves the relevant ones, and feeds them into each new conversation. Meta’s Muse Wonder models, launched October 12, 2026, put this ability front and center with what Meta calls “Active Memory,” designed to hold on to what matters to you for months. In this guide, we break down what is ai memory / ai memory in plain English — what it is, how it works, and how to use it.

What Is AI Memory / AI Memory: Why doesn’t an AI just remember everything naturally?

Here’s the surprising truth: a language model is a function. Text goes in, text comes out, and it keeps no state between calls. A chat only feels continuous because the app resends your entire conversation history with every new message — as one developer’s deep dive puts it, every “memory” feature is really an app pasting saved text into your prompt before the model sees it.

The bottleneck is the context window — the fixed amount of text a model can see in one go. Think of it as a desk with limited workspace: when a conversation grows past the limit, older messages get pushed off the edge and vanish entirely. That’s why an AI can forget something from an hour ago in a long chat.

What are the two types of AI memory?

AI memory is the system of storing, retrieving, and re-injecting information from past interactions so an assistant can personalize future responses without the user repeating themselves.

AI practitioners generally split memory into two kinds:

Type Where it lives How long it lasts Example
Short-term (working) memory Inside the current conversation’s context window One chat session The AI refers to a recipe ingredient from five messages ago
Long-term memory A memory store outside the model, managed by the app Across conversations — days, weeks, months The AI remembers you’re vegetarian and suggests meat-free recipes next month

Short-term memory covers the active conversation only; long-term memory extracts what seems important — preferences, profile, recurring projects — and keeps it available for future sessions.

AI memory is like notes from a chat: the app saves what matters and pulls it back up when relevant.

How does AI memory actually work under the hood?

Strip away the marketing and most AI memory systems do the same three things:

  1. Capture. The app spots details worth keeping — either because you said “remember this” or because the system flags something useful, like a preference or project name.
  2. Store. Those details are saved as structured notes in a memory store, indexed by meaning (semantic search) so related ideas can be found later — not as one giant transcript.
  3. Retrieve and inject. When you send a new message, the app searches the memory store for relevant notes and pastes the matching ones into the prompt. The model never “recalls” anything — it just reads what’s put in front of it.

ChatGPT’s implementation shows the pattern clearly. It keeps saved memories (details you asked it to keep or that it flagged as useful) separate from your chat history, alongside reference chat history, which draws on relevant bits of past conversations. You can see and edit what’s stored under Settings → Personalization → Memory, ask “what do you remember about me?” in chat, or tell it to forget something on the spot. Notably, deleting the original chat does not automatically delete a separate saved memory, and OpenAI’s Memory FAQ notes logs of deleted memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging.

One more thing most explainers skip: memory is per-app, not portable. The notes ChatGPT keeps live inside ChatGPT — Claude and Gemini know nothing about them.

What is Muse Wonder’s “Active Memory”?

On October 12, 2026, Meta’s Superintelligence Lab released Muse Wonder and a larger sibling, Muse Wonder Full — the company’s first frontier models, built for long-running personal and professional AI agents. Muse Wonder is available to developers through the Meta Model API and Muse Code; the Full version is reserved for Muse Code subscribers.

The launch centered on two capabilities. Active Memory carries important context about you across conversations, surfacing the details that matter for the task at hand. Active Focus keeps the model working through difficult goals — trying other approaches when blocked, asking for clarification, and checking before important actions. Meta claims Muse Wonder scores higher on MemoryBench — a research benchmark for memory and continual learning in LLM systems — than rival Fable, Opus, or Astra models, according to TechCrunch’s launch coverage.

Meta research scientist Kavya Kopparapu framed the goal in the launch video: significant effort went into making sure the model “can remember what matters to you over days, weeks, months, and beyond.” The models also ship with a roughly one-million-token context window and API pricing of $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens. Muse Wonder will also power more of Meta’s personal AI agent, Muse, rolling out to subscribers first. Both models accept text, images, video, and audio input — learn more in What Is Multimodal AI? What are the limits and risks of AI memory?

Memory is useful, but it isn’t magic — and it can fail in ways worth knowing about:

  • It can remember the wrong things. A misheard preference or a fact that was true last year but not now can quietly steer answers off course. Research on memory benchmarks has found that injecting irrelevant or poorly chosen memories can actually degrade answer quality.
  • Memories can vanish. Users have reported episodes where ChatGPT suddenly lost stored memories — a reminder these systems are software with bugs, not a permanent record.
  • It’s a privacy surface. Your memories are tied to your account and aren’t visible to other users — but they are stored on someone’s servers, so anything you wouldn’t want retained shouldn’t go into the chat. See AI Hallucinations: What They Are & How to Reduce Them for why you should verify AI claims rather than trusting recalled “facts” blindly.

How can you control what an AI remembers about you?

A few practical habits keep AI memory working for you instead of against you:

  1. Review your memory settings. In ChatGPT, that’s Settings → Personalization → Memory, where you can read, edit, or delete stored entries.
  2. Be explicit. “Remember that I’m training for a marathon” and “Forget my old address” are commands most memory-enabled assistants understand on the spot.
  3. Turn it off for sensitive topics. Discussing health or finances? Disable memory or chat-history reference for that session.
  4. Don’t share what you’d regret storing. Passwords and ID numbers don’t belong in any AI chat, memory or not.
  5. Treat remembered facts as drafts. If an assistant acts on an old memory, confirm it’s still current before it matters. Good prompting habits help too: see Prompt Engineering Basics: Get Better AI Answers.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI memory the same as a context window?

No. The context window is short-term working memory: everything the model can see within one conversation. AI long-term memory persists across conversations by storing notes outside the model and retrieving them when relevant.

Does ChatGPT remember everything I type?

No. It keeps saved memories (details you asked it to keep or that it flagged as useful) and can reference relevant chat history when that setting is on. You can view, edit, or delete what’s stored under Settings → Personalization → Memory.

What is Meta Muse Wonder’s Active Memory?

Meta’s name for the cross-conversation recall in its Muse Wonder and Muse Wonder Full models, launched October 12, 2026. It’s designed to carry important context about you across conversations spanning days, weeks, or months.

Can I delete what an AI remembers about me?

Yes. In ChatGPT you can delete individual saved memories or turn memory off entirely from the memory settings. Note that deleting a chat doesn’t automatically delete saved memories, and OpenAI may retain logs of deleted memories for up to 30 days.

Is it safe to let an AI remember personal details?

For everyday preferences it’s generally fine: memories are tied to your account and not visible to others. Avoid passwords, ID numbers, and highly sensitive data, and review stored memories periodically.

What is MemoryBench?

A research benchmark that evaluates how well LLM systems handle memory and continual learning — for example, remembering earlier decisions in a long task. Meta cited it at the Muse Wonder launch, claiming Wonder outscores rival models on it in the company’s own testing.

AI memory feels like magic until you see the mechanism — saved notes, smart retrieval, and a well-timed paste into the prompt. Meta’s Muse Wonder is betting that doing this well, over months rather than minutes, is what turns a chatbot into a genuinely useful agent. Whether it delivers will depend on the details: accuracy of recall, respect for privacy, and real control over what’s remembered.
