Technical SEO Checklist for Small Business Websites

Great content can’t rank if search engines struggle to find, crawl or understand your pages. Technical SEO makes sure the foundations are solid. This checklist covers what matters most for small business websites, in the order we usually check it.

1. Make sure Google can find your site

  • Verify your site in Google Search Console. It’s free and shows how Google sees your site, including indexing issues and search queries.
  • Submit an XML sitemap. WordPress generates one automatically at /wp-sitemap.xml, and SEO plugins provide their own.
  • Check robots.txt. Make sure you’re not accidentally blocking important pages or resources.
  • Look for “noindex” by mistake. In WordPress, check Settings → Reading to ensure “Discourage search engines” is not ticked on a live site.

2. Fix indexing problems

In Search Console’s Pages report, review pages that aren’t indexed and why. Common causes include duplicate content, redirects, soft 404 errors and thin pages. Not every page needs to be indexed — but every important page should be.

3. Use one version of your domain

Your site should load on a single version — for example https://www.example.com — with all other versions (http, non-www) redirecting to it permanently (301). Canonical tags should point to the preferred URL.

4. Build a clear site structure

  • Important pages should be reachable within a few clicks from the homepage.
  • Use descriptive, short URLs such as /services/web-development/.
  • Link related pages to each other with meaningful anchor text.
  • Add breadcrumbs so both users and search engines understand the hierarchy.

5. Get page speed and Core Web Vitals right

Google’s Core Web Vitals measure loading (Largest Contentful Paint), responsiveness (Interaction to Next Paint) and visual stability (Cumulative Layout Shift). Check them in PageSpeed Insights and Search Console. Quick wins include:

  • Compress images and use modern formats such as WebP or AVIF
  • Set width and height on images to prevent layout shifts
  • Remove unused plugins and scripts
  • Use caching and a CDN
  • Choose quality hosting

6. Be excellent on mobile

Google primarily uses the mobile version of your site for indexing. Test key pages on real phones: readable text without zooming, buttons that are easy to tap, no horizontal scrolling and no intrusive pop-ups.

7. Write unique titles and descriptions

Every page needs a unique, descriptive title tag (around 50–60 characters) and a meta description (around 140–160 characters) that encourages clicks. Use one H1 per page that clearly states its topic.

8. Add structured data

Schema markup helps search engines understand your content and can enable rich results. Useful types for businesses include Organization or LocalBusiness, BreadcrumbList, Article for blog posts, Product for stores and FAQPage where appropriate. Test with Google’s Rich Results Test.

9. Handle errors and redirects

  • Fix broken internal links
  • Redirect old URLs to their closest new equivalents after a redesign
  • Avoid redirect chains (A → B → C)
  • Create a helpful 404 page with links to key sections

10. Secure your site

Use HTTPS everywhere with a valid SSL certificate, keep software updated and monitor Search Console’s Security Issues report. A hacked site can be removed from results quickly.

Use descriptive file names and alt text that explains the image. Alt text improves accessibility and helps images appear in image search.

12. Monitor regularly

Technical SEO isn’t a one-off job. Review Search Console monthly for new errors, check speed after adding features, and run a crawl with a tool such as Screaming Frog every few months.

Summary

Technical SEO is about removing obstacles between your content and the people searching for it. Work through this checklist, fix the biggest issues first, and your content will have a much better chance to rank.
