Start with constraints, not a wishlist
SEO backlogs grow quickly: broken redirects, missing meta titles, new service pages, competitor content gaps. Without a prioritization rule, teams bounce between tasks and rarely finish compounders.
Begin with three constraints: crawl/index health, commercial intent, and dependencies. If Google cannot reliably fetch and understand money pages, publishing more blogs will not save you.
A simple scoring model
- Impact: How directly could this affect qualified inquiries?
- Confidence: How clear is the evidence from Search Console, crawls, or analytics?
- Effort: Engineering hours, content hours, stakeholder approvals.
- Risk if delayed: Indexed errors, policy issues, or major template bugs rise to the top.
Multiply impact and confidence, divide by effort, then adjust for risk. You do not need perfect math — you need a shared language for tradeoffs.
Sequence that usually works
Fix indexation and canonical problems on templates that affect many URLs. Improve titles, internal links, and clarity on pages that already attract impressions. Then expand content where you have differentiation and sales alignment.
Review the backlog monthly. Kill tasks that no longer map to a business goal. SEO is a system of finished loops, not an infinite ideas list.
